My oldest brother was gay. I can recall the obstacles and biases he encountered growing up in a small town, simply because of his sexual orientation. My brother lived as if always hiding behind a mask, at least he did until he moved away to attend college where he was finally able to live his life by being true to himself. However, without the support system of his friends and family (a very important factor to being well adjusted) he would not have lived as happily or as fulfilled as he did. My brother taught me that sexual orientation does not determine the type of person an individual will be, in fact, it only means that the individual knows how to love.

I have worked with many individuals with developmental and physical disabilities, individuals who have experienced a traumatic event(s) or have been the victim of domestic violence / sexual assault. I have worked with many individuals to set and accomplish their goals and to maintain or improve their level of functioning when experiencing a trauma, crisis situation, overwhelming stress, relationship issues/concerns, or major changes in their lives.

As individual, human beings, we are all unique with varying strengths/weaknesses and/or abilities/disabilities.different life experiences, beliefs and values combine to create us as the person we are. It is my belief that working with individuals through their value/belief system is important. Our thoughts about our difficulties (experiences); such as; relationships, work, finances, heath issues, parenting, etc. determine the feelings we have in response to the experience, which in turn determines our behaviors (responses) to the experiences. My goal, when working with clients in counseling is to understand the unique emotional, mental, physical, and social needs/issues of each client so symptoms can be stabilized /reduced so the client can return to their previous (if not higher) level of functioning at work, home, or socially.
