ANICE JOSEPHINE CARNEY is a service-connected disabled veteran and author of "Purple Hearts and Silver Stars." Our interview will explore "Don't Ask...Don't Tell."
Born Feb. 25, 1950 (as John Joseph Carney) Janice always had a sense that things were not as they seemed. She graduated from high school outside of Boston, Massachusetts in 1969 and joined the Army, serving in Vietnam from July 1970 through July 1971. Finding that the Army "did not make a man out of me," she then "tried the all-American family institution of marriage to find a gender role to play."
This turned into a "25-year relationship that produced three wonderful children but a wife that, in the end, hated the woman that I was, and left me for what she called a 'real man'."
