Patti Jagisch says that compounding pharmacies are the “original form of pharmacy where prescriptions are made from scratch.”
Patti Jagisch’s own need for a “designer prescription” for hormones landed her at the front door of her lifework. She had worked at The Apothecary for 15 years as a bookkeeper and pharmacy technician, then went back to school to finish her degree in accounting – she’s also a CPA. At the time, she began having very bad side effects from taking Premerin, and started researching other methods for treating menopause.
She found that bio-identical hormones, meaning bio-identical with what your body normally would produce (whereas Premerin is an estrogen replacement drug made from the urine of pregnant mares), worked beautifully for her. She went back to the pharmacy, only this time she and another employee, a pharmacist, bought it! Besides customized hormone replacement, they also provide prescriptions to All Children’s Hospital, ophthalmologists, and vets. “It is unbelievable what we can do for animals,” says Patti, who discovered that firsthand, too, when the medicine her dog needed was no longer being made.
Patti loves to travel, especially in Europe, and now has an excuse to go frequently. Her daughter is in college in England, studying equine science/management. Patti is thrilled her daughter has found a vocation so well suited for her. She grew up riding with Mom and while she is away at school, her two beloved hunter-jumpers are being well cared for by Mom.
